Happy St. Patrick's Day
Our St. Patrick's Day celebration weekend is officially in the books! We had an incredible turnout with 83 players and 15 rebuys across the two days, and your festive spirit was absolutely phenomenal! Most of you went all out with green outfits, green drinks, and shouting "All In for Patrick!"—it was a blast! I handed out a ton of reward cards and loved every minute of it. Huge thanks to everyone who joined in!
Congrats to our winners: Dave Webb took Sunday, and Eileen Grady claimed Monday. Check out Eileen’s new lucky shamrock card protector in the photos below. Big shoutout to my photographers—Eileen, Nancie, Annie, and Olivia—for stepping up big time. I totally dropped the ball on snapping pics myself, so you all saved the day. Click either collage to see the full photo album.
A special thanks to Lesley and Matt for distributing reward cards for green attire. I’d have been lost without you—literally—since my colour blindness makes it impossible. Lesley can vouch for that after our shopping trip where every “green” shirt I picked was actually brown. LoL it's very frustrating but I've had to deal with it my whole life.
Hope you all loved the custom St. Patrick’s Day tournament clock I whipped up, complete with Celtic font, shamrocks, and an Irish jig (polished up by Lesley—thanks again, hon)! Can’t wait for our next big event at the end of the month—stay tuned for details!
Player Eligibility
It's time for a friendly reminder about how Dead Man's Hand Poker operates. Venues pay me for each customer who comes to play poker—emphasis on "customer." If a player doesn't spend any money, they're not considered a customer, and the venue can withhold my payment. It's no secret that everyone attending is expected to spend a minimum of $10 on food or drinks. This is clearly outlined in the Player Info Sheet, sent to all new players and available on the website:

Plus, there's a weekly reminder at the bottom of the newsletter:

Honestly, I don’t think it’s a big ask. You wouldn’t sit at a restaurant table for three hours watching a game without ordering anything—they’d kick you out. Poker’s no different. Normally, this isn’t an issue. Before this week, I can only recall a couple of cases in recent months, and I usually handle it quietly with the individual. Problem solved. But this week, it happened four times. To top it off, the server couldn’t recall three of the offenders’ names, so I can’t even address them directly.
Full disclosure: if the restaurant still paid me for a non-spender, I wouldn’t bat an eye. It’s happened before, and I didn’t say a word. But when my payment gets docked, it stings. I love running these tournaments—it’s a passion—but it’s also a business for me and the venues. The money I collect funds prizes and other expenses. When someone doesn’t spend and I don’t get paid, I’m essentially working for free.

Spending $10 isn’t tough. Even if you don’t drink alcohol, both venues have full menus. You could also buy a drink for someone else (maybe trade for one of their reward cards?). Just note: a drink someone buys you counts toward their bill, not yours—you still need to hit $10.
Many of you go above and beyond, spending $20+ to snag a reward card, and the venues and I appreciate it. But spending big one night doesn’t give you a free pass later. If you want a deal like that, work it out with the restaurant. All I care about is what the server tells me: if you didn’t spend and I’m not getting paid, no deal matters.
So please, help me out—spend a simple $10 to play. As the Player Info Sheet states, non-spenders won’t earn points, and repeat offenders may be asked not to return. Let’s keep this fun for everyone!
Rules Are Fun
You may have noticed a new section titled Rules in the menu bar. It breaks down into 3 different pages.

On the first page, you'll find the official Tournament Directors Association rules in all of its 22 page glory. Feel free to read them at your leisure and you'll be able to lecture-- I mean inform the other players around you at the games. I also have a copy of the rules on hand at every event if you'd like to read them while playing.
On the second page, you'll find the House Rules section. While currently blank (coming soon!), this is where I'll put our own rules that may differ from the traditional ones, either because of the social nature of our league or perhaps because the TDA rules aren't clear enough in some areas. I'd just like to have a place where they are all written down to which I can refer.
On the third page, I’ll be compiling all the lectures-- I mean lessons that previously appeared in the newsletter. Any new posts will also be included there moving forward. You can also leave comments or questions so we can have a discussion, or leave my work a 5 star rating!

This is my first step to making the Dead Man's Hand Poker website more than just a place to check the standings and recruit new players. Someday it will be the coolest place on the interwebs where you're all gonna want to spend all your time!
