The champ rode back into town and tipped his hat once more! Just 11 days after conquering The Harvest Moon Showdown Championship, Smiley holstered his first win of The Cabin Fever Months! WTG Smiley!

In a bold display of I’m-dog-tired-let’s-settle-this-at-sundown energy, Smiley stared down a 205K all-in and said “call” blind, turning over nothin’ but 4♣2♣, trailing his heads-up rival Alex Tikk’s Q♣T♣. Truth be told, I had no business lastin’ as long as I did. Just 12 days after tastin’ victory for the very first time, Mike Newell rode back into town and cleaned out the saloon once again! WTG Mike! That makes him the first two-time winner of the Cabin Fever Months, and he’s wastin’ no time showin’ why.

Spotted proudly wearin’ the Bubble Shirt he won just last week at the Harvest Moon Showdown Championship, Mike proved that shirt ain’t just for show. He cashed it in for a 5-card rebuy, then rode that rebuy straight to the winner’s circle. I warned you varmints last week — don’t let this fella get too far ahead, because those double reward cards are gonna turn into a real problem for the rest of the posse.

I checked the old ledgers, and sure enough, Jim first saddled up back on April 4th, 2024, when Hamilton and Burlington still had separate standings. That’s a long trail without a win… though I say that with a grin.

Jim’s been featured in these campfire tales before, but usually because the final two agreed to chop the pot — most often at Jim’s suggestion. And as we all know ’round these parts, a chop’s a tie, and a tie ain’t a win. Seven times he shook hands at high noon over those 648 days… but not this time.

This time Jim offered, but then sealed the deal proper. Maybe runner-up Allen Botelho should’ve taken that deal. Dan Veltri rounded out the podium in 3rd place.

With the Harvest Moon Showdown now behind us, the trail rolls on into the new season — The Cabin Fever Months — and the updated standings are live on the website. Sitting tall at the top of the heap is Mike Newell.

It’s Sunday, January 11th, and the town bell’s ringin’ for the Harvest Moon Showdown Championship at the Brown Barrel. This ain’t no practice round — this is where legends get carved into the woodwork.

If you’re saddled up for the Stay & Play Championship, I’ll need you hitchin’ your horse by 11:45 AM sharp. If you’re ridin’ into the Main Championship, or hopin’ to sneak in from the waitlist, best be in town by 1:30 PM. Show up later than that without sendin’ word, and your seat might get claimed by one of them standby desperados itching for a chance at glory.

Now listen close, even if you didn’t qualify for the big dance, don’t go ridin’ off just yet. Once bullets start flyin’ and players begin hittin’ the trail from the main championship, we’ll be firein’ up Stay & Plays around 3:30 or 4 PM. These shootouts’ll count toward the Cabin Fever Months standings, with only your top two finishes countin’ for points. On top of that, I’ll be handin’ out 10 reward cards total to the top four finishers of every Stay & Play, so there’s plenty of loot to be won. Come on out, stack some cards, and see who’s got the grit to haul off the grand prize.

JEREMY PACZUSKI WINS AT BROWN BARREL

Saddle up, card slingers — this here week of limbo just keeps on stretchin’ like a desert horizon. The Cabin Fever Months have already kicked up dust, with points gettin’ handed out before we even know who’ll be wearin’ the crown from the Harvest Moon Showdown! That’s right — this was the last regular stop on the trail (four in the books now for the new season) before the HMS Championship rides into town this Sunday. If your name’s on the list, best not be late when the bell rings.

Now let’s talk about how this dust-up ended.

The night belonged to Jeremy Paczuski — WTG, Jeremy! 🤠 And he didn’t just win it… he ended it in one thunderclap of a hand. Jeremy sat in the big blind with about 300K in chips when both remaining challengers shoved their stacks in before he’d even lifted a finger — 75K between ’em, all pushed to the middle.

Jeremy peeked down at pocket nines and snapped the call quicker than a gunslinger drawin’ iron. He already had the edge preflop, with his two opponents holdin’ nothing but three overcards between ’em. But by the time the river rolled through, those nines had grown into a full house, and just like that the shootout was over.

Jeremy took down last season’s points boss Amit Jhamb in 2nd (pictured here wearin’ the look of a man who just watched his luck ride off into the sunset), with Kevin Adams claimin’ 3rd.

Now let’s talk about how this dust-up ended.

The night belonged to Jeremy Paczuski — WTG, Jeremy! 🤠 And he didn’t just win it… he ended it in one thunderclap of a hand. Jeremy sat in the big blind with about 300K in chips when both remaining challengers shoved their stacks in before he’d even lifted a finger — 75K between ’em, all pushed to the middle.

Jeremy peeked down at pocket nines and snapped the call quicker than a gunslinger drawin’ iron. He already had the edge preflop, with his two opponents holdin’ nothing but three overcards between ’em. But by the time the river rolled through, those nines had grown into a full house, and just like that the shootout was over.

Now, Russell don’t qualify for the Wildcard on account of only ridin’ into town last week—but that sure didn’t stop him from takin’ down his first-ever win with Dead Man’s Hand Poker. WTG Russell! He’s in from Nova Scotia over Christmas with his better half, Cheri, visitin’ kin—including his uncle Norm, who also made it to the final table. That’s one mighty fine campfire tale to take back east.

But make no mistake—the Wildcard prize belongs to Maueen Ali. WTG Maueen! 🤠
Maueen finished 2nd, and in doin’ so officially won the Wildcard and locked up her seat in the Championship. Night two of our Double Reward Card Ugly Xmas Sweater Celebration rode into town, and this time at least the winner remembered to dress for the holidays 🤠🎄. Tipping his hat (a Santa hat, to be exact) was Adam Doyon, who sleighed the competition in true frontier fashion. Rockin’ Christmas lights and holiday grit, Adam outdrew a final table where every last cowpoke was decked out in festive wear. WTG Adam!

Unfortunately for this here sheriff, Adam turned his win and 10 bounties into a full 30 reward cards, which is roughly a wagonload of cards ridin’ off into the sunset. Dan K fought hard and finished a close 2nd in his Detroit Lions Xmas sweater, while Kevin Adams claimed 3rd place—just barely missin’ the title of ugliest sweater overall (though he did win it at his table).

When the dust settled and the votes were counted, the honor of Ugliest Sweater (or outfit… you folks decided) went to David Rawlings! WTG David! He hauled in 30 reward cards of his own and even finished 4th in the tournament, nearly pullin’ off a clean sweep with more cards than one man oughta carry. Hats off as well to the other ugly sweater table winners—Harry Meloche, Kevin Adams, Patrick Smith, and Jerry Jambor—each ridin’ home with 10 reward cards for their efforts.

Out on the snow-dusted frontier for Ugly Xmas Sweater Night #1, there was one lone gunslinger at the final table who forgot to deck himself out in holiday gear. No tinsel, no antlers, no jinglin’ bells. But festive or not, Avi Saliba rode into town and claimed his first-ever Dead Man’s Hand Poker victory — sealing the deal with none other than pocket aces! 🤠🎄 WTG Avi!

It took him 11 months, 3 days, and 59 shootouts to finally draw the winning hand — and when the moment came, he was sittin’ on the best bullets in the West. Just look at all them reward cards he hauled in… cards that could’ve been doubled if he’d remembered to wear a little Christmas cheer.

Now, earlier in the night I showed some holiday mercy, lettin’ a few crafty cowpokes borrow a scarf or a hat to sneak in a cheap rebuy — all in the name of Christmas spirit (you poker folk and your fancy angles). Before the final table cards were even dealt, Dan Rapp was jawin’ at the rail, sayin’ he had his sights set on a Top 8 spot overall — all so he could claim that sweet dealer button at the championship showdown on January 11th. Well, partner… talk about callin’ your shot 🤠

Dan didn’t just aim for it — he won the whole dang tournament, notchin’ up his third win of the season! WTG Dan!

But the trail took a funny bend after that. In classic Dan fashion, he scooped up reward cards instead of points for all 11 of his bounties. Turns out that little choice sent him ridin’ past the hitchin’ post — instead of landin’ in 6th place where he needed to be, Dan slid into 9th. When the dust settled and the chips were counted, Carol Ann Fitz-Robb stood tall as the last gunslinger left! WTG CAFR! That makes her second win of the season, and this time she made sure there was no debate at high noon. The first time her name went in the history books, she couldn’t quite finish the job against yours truly — but this go-round, I was long buried in Boot Hill before the final table even formed. No chance to block her path this time.

Ridin’ in 2nd place, Smiley once again showed steady aim with another strong finish. With only four showdowns left on the trail, he’s got a steep climb if he wants to run down Amit for the top spot — but this cowboy ain’t holsterin’ his hopes just yet.

Now folks, it’s a rare sight on the frontier when I miss one Dead Man’s Hand showdown—let alone two in the same darn week. Usually that only happens when I’m laid up in the bunkhouse coughing like a mule in a dust storm. But this time, I had a far better reason: it was my lovely Lesley’s birthday. So tip of the hat once again to Dave and Bev Terceira for ridin’ in and keepin’ the campfire burnin’ while I was out celebratin’.

And wouldn’t you know it—while I was off the trail—a greenhorn sauntered into town and won the whole shebang on their very first ride! Big ol’ congratulations to Jean-Paul Beyak, who took down the pot like he’d been shufflin’ cards with outlaws his whole life.

Now, I wasn’t there to witness the gunfight myself, but I see Chris Higham penciled in for 2nd. Which can only mean one thing: some catastrophic, soul-crushing bad beat where Chris got his chips in good—naturally—and fate kicked him in the shins again. *rolls eyes*

Under the lantern glow of Dead Man’s Hand Poker, the saloon doors swung wide for a night folks won’t soon forget. The wind outside howled like a coyote, but inside the tables were warm and the chips clattered like spurs on old floorboards.

And wouldn’t you know it—on her 76th birthday, no less—Judy Webster rode in like a seasoned gunslinger and walked out with her second win of the season. WTG Judy! Cool as creek water and sharp as a bowie knife, Judy stared down the table and showed the young guns that time only makes a legend steadier. And wouldn’t you know it—on her 76th birthday, no less—Judy Webster rode in like a seasoned gunslinger and walked out with her second win of the season. WTG Judy! Cool as creek water and sharp as a bowie knife, Judy stared down the table and showed the young guns that time only makes a legend steadier. When the final card hit the felt, she claimed the pot and the braggin’ rights, earning a hearty round of whoops and hat tips from the whole room.

Under the flicker of lantern light at last night’s Dead Man’s Hand showdown, the cards fell like dust in a desert wind—and when the smoke cleared, one gunslinger stood taller than the rest.

Wannee Armes rode into town cool as the canyon moon and left with the whole pot tucked under her hat. It was pocket aces, the deadliest pair in the West, that finished the job. With those pocket pistols, she put the final bullet in the competition and claimed first place without so much as a tremble in her trigger finger.

Second place went to Mike “King Donkey” Dilivio, who started the night like an outlaw with a Gatling gun—spraying down the field and dragging in 15 bounties, more than most folks see in a month. GREIG FINDLEY WINS AT CARRIGAN ARMS

Despite bein’ mostly absent from this here season, ol’ Greig Findley rode back into town last night and claimed himself the top prize. After only three showdowns, he’s already sittin’ pretty in a Championship spot (62nd). WTG Greig!

He outgunned yours truly in a lightning-quick, one-hand duel at high noon—his K9 drawlin’ past my A4 after we both paired up our kickers. The final four was tighter than a saloon piano string, with each of us totin’ near-even stacks and any one of us standin’ a fair chance to ride off with the win.

Now, I ain’t one to chase points—just the glory—so 2nd place gets handed over to newcomer and Aces & Eights return rider Syd Evans. 3rd place fell to Avi Saliba, who wrangled himself a mighty stack early on, only to watch it scatter like tumbleweeds in a dust storm once the final table rolled around.

AMIT JHAMB WINS AT BROWN BARREL

In a scene fit for a dime-store Western, where the big dogs just keep on getting bigger, our top gunslinger on the season, Amit Jhamb, went and snagged himself another victory last night. That makes two notches on his belt this season—WTG Amit! With that win, Amit’s already sizeable lead over the rest of the posse stretches even farther across the prairie. But don’t go hangin’ your hats in defeat just yet, folks; there’s still plenty of trail left to ride, and more than enough time for a late-season ambush.

Hot on his heels, the great-grand-daddy of poker himself, old Norm Gaudette, moseyed into town and secured a fine 2nd-place finish. And bringing up the rear of our top trio, Ryan Hawke rode strong and steady to round out the top 3. A mighty fine showdown all around!

ROCHELLE MATTE WINS AT CARRIGAN ARMS

Well now, in addition to our usual band of poker outlaws, we had a whole mess of townsfolk bellied up to the bar to watch the Saskatchewan Roughriders as they wrangled themselves the 112th Grey Cup! Big thanks to the Carrigan Arms for keepin’ every cowpoke fed with free hot dogs and chili at the half-time roundup. Much obliged!

As for the Grey Cup Edition showdown at the Dead Man’s Hand corral, it was Rochelle Matte who rode off with the pot! WTG Rochelle! She’s pictured here flauntin’ that trusty double–reward-card-producin’ shirt of hers — the one with those Muppet-lookin’ versions of Lesley and me stitched on it. That magic garment finally paid its dues, earnin’ her a 5-card rebuy before she lassoed the whole dang win and strutted off with 10 cards for her efforts!

Karen Perrett came thunderin’ in for a strong 2nd-place finish — her best ride with us so far — and fresh-faced newcomer Mike Furneaux made himself right at home on the podium in 3rd on his very first night at Dead Man’s Hand Poker. Fine work, all three of you!
